How do I Stream from OBS or vMix?
Any encoder that sends RTMP can stream to your channel, including OBS Studio, vMix and hardware encoders. You need two things: the channel's RTMP server URL and a stream key.
Get Your Server URL and Stream Key
- In the channel menu, click Live Stream.
- Under Broadcast Configuration, copy the RTMP Server URL.
- Use the stream key you saved when you created the channel.
The stream key is hidden on this screen and can't be shown again. If you don't have it, regenerate it.
Public HLS Entry Point, also on this screen, is your channel's playback address for viewers and players, not for encoders.
Choose Which Key to Use
| Key | Looks like | What happens when the encoder connects |
|---|---|---|
| Stream key | Ab3dEf6hIj9K | The feed goes on air straight away, as the channel's direct feed |
| Feeder stream key | Ab3dEf6hIj9K_feeder_StageCam | The feed joins the feeder pool as StageCam, and goes on air when it's selected on Feeders or by Auto Feed |
- One encoder: use the stream key.
- Several encoders or cameras that you want to switch between: give each a feeder stream key. See How do I Switch Between Feeds?.
Build a Feeder Stream Key
- In the channel menu, click Feeders.
- Under OBS & RTMP Encoder Setup, paste your stream key into Your Private Stream Key. It stays in your browser and isn't sent to Cecula Stream.
- In Feed Name (e.g. OBS, stage_cam), enter a name for this encoder.
- Copy RTMP Server / URL and OBS Stream Key.
Give each encoder a different feed name. Feed names can use letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores; any other character, such as a space, is replaced with an underscore. For example, the name Stage Cam becomes Ab3dEf6hIj9K_feeder_Stage_Cam.
Set Up OBS
- In OBS, open Settings, then Stream.
- Set Service to Custom...
- In Server, paste the RTMP server URL.
- In Stream Key, paste your stream key or feeder stream key.
- Click OK.
- Click Start Streaming.
To check it's working:
- Stream key: the channel's Overview shows STREAMING after a few seconds.
- Feeder stream key: the feed appears under Feeder Pool on Feeders.
Set Up vMix and Other Encoders
vMix:
- Open the streaming settings (the cog next to Stream).
- Set Destination to Custom RTMP Server.
- Paste the RTMP server URL into URL, and your key into Stream Name or Key.
- Start streaming.
Other software and hardware encoders: choose a custom RTMP destination, and enter the RTMP server URL and stream key in the server (or URL) and stream key (or stream name) fields.
If an encoder asks for a single address, join them with a slash: RTMP server URL/stream key.
Recommended Encoder Settings
These settings match how Cecula Stream processes live video, and give the smoothest result:
| Setting | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Resolution | Up to your plan's maximum resolution, such as 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720 |
| Frame rate | 30 fps, constant |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Video bitrate | Around your plan's maximum bitrate, and no more than your upload connection can sustain |
| Audio codec | AAC, 48 kHz, stereo |
| Audio bitrate | 128 to 192 Kbps |
- Bitrate: your channel's top quality is capped at your plan's maximum bitrate, or at the bitrate you send if that's lower. Sending more than the plan allows uses more of your connection without improving what viewers see.
- Connection: leave headroom. Keep your total bitrate well below your upload speed, so the stream survives dips in your connection.
- Video must arrive: the channel only cuts to your feed once it receives video. An encoder that sends audio only stays off air.
Regenerate Your Stream Key
Regenerate the key if you've lost it, or if someone who shouldn't have it might. Owners and administrators can do this.
- In the channel menu, click Live Stream.
- Under Broadcast Configuration, click the refresh icon (Regenerate Stream Key) next to Stream Key. The key is replaced as soon as you click; there's no confirmation.
- New Key Generated shows the new key once. Copy it.
- Click I HAVE SAVED THE KEY.
- Enter the new key in every encoder, and build new feeder stream keys for any encoders that use them.
The old key stops being accepted for new connections. Keys are never reused, on any channel.
Stop Streaming
Stop the stream in your encoder. After a few seconds, the channel goes back to its programming. See After the Broadcast.
